As Summer comes to a close and we look forward to the Fall, two notable events share the same celebratory day, August 26th.
Women’s Equality Day
According to the National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA), “At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), in 1971 and passed in 1973, the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as ‘Women’s Equality Day.’ The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote… The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality.”
You can learn more about Women’s Equality Day and promote awareness with materials that NWHA provides on their website.
National Dog Day
On a lighter note, August 26th also commemorates National Dog Day. If you have a canine companion in your life, then you already know the non-judgemental companionship that they willing offer. Did you know, however, that “women commonly rate dogs as better bed partners than cats and human partners and report that their dogs enhance their sleep quality“?
If you don’t have a canine companion, then you ought to consider if you are a good candidate for a dog, given the commitment and your current living situation. If you decide that the time is right to bring a canine companion into your life then consider rescuing a deserving dog and providing a forever-home.
